Melksham rock and roll club celebrate their 5th anniversary. The
evening started with Anne and John at the door as always so friendly and
welcoming. Richard and Geoff who put so much work into the club were
also at the door also to welcome their guests and thank them for coming.
Once into the club we find a seat near the door as we usually do, and mingle
saying hello to all the regulars who we look forward to seeing each month.
The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming, and the resident DJ Terry the Cockney
Rebel is a great chap who seems to know exactly what to play keeping everyone on
the dance floor - we strollers love it don't we girls? and also occasionally the
odd chap who may get up and join in now and again! Drinks are very
reasonably priced and water is always on the bar for those who wish not to
drink. The bar staff are very friendly and you are never kept
waiting for too long. We now have air conditioning so its very
comfortable and not to smoky. The band Jive street comes onto the
stage and get a huge welcome - the hall is packed tonight, and the array of
colours from the full circle skirts, and drapes which are a sight to see - its
like stepping back in time. The floor is full, and if you like
people watching, as i do, then you will love Melksham rock and roll club.
There are so many different styles of dancers - last month we had two unexpected
world champion rock and roll dancers who wowed the crowd with their splendid
performance. Alternatively for those who don't know how to jive
there are two of our experienced dancers Sam and Jason who teach in the Rachel
Fowler Centre who are very patient and keen to teach anyone interested.
Richard and Carol usually arrange a float to support the local carnival each
year (volunteers permitting) so all in all the club is actively involved with
the local community. John and myself started coming to Melksham rock
and roll club approximately three and a half years ago and we didn't know
anyone, but now we have many friends and contacts we are very fond of.
We used to visit many of the London clubs in the seventies as that was where we
lived at that time, and we loved the rock and roll scene then. Now
because of many peoples hard work we are fortunate to continue our love of rock
and roll. Long may it continue. Many thanks for a
fantastic fifth anniversary.
Jackie and John Harrington.
